Some of life’s most important lesson are not learnt in the comfort of cushioned chairs and brightly lit classrooms but in the dangers of stormy nights when merciless waves beat hard upon us and will not rest till they have drowned our boats and all therein. Jesus, the master Teacher, on many occasions used such dreary nights as the golden pen with which He wrote indelible lessons on the hearts of His disciples. Whether they were on the verge of drowning or inches away from shame, Jesus’ skilful hands knew how to prod His disciples and turn their attention from the ‘problem of pain’ to the treasures that could be found in its lonely abyss. Of course it is natural to kick and scream in the midst of pain but if we are going to come out better or even come out at all, we need to find some quiet moments in which we can hear the master Teacher. Our lives depend on what He has to teach us in right there in the midst of the storms.
